Heavy Traffic Class 5 Licence

Drivetech Ltd provides Class 5 heavy traffic licence training for drivers wanting to operate heavy combination vehicles with confidence and competency. Our training is practical, supportive, and designed to help you meet the requirements for your Class 5 licence while building the knowledge and driving skills needed for larger combination vehicles.

A Class 5 licence allows you to drive a combination vehicle with a gross combined weight of more than 25,000kg.

About the Course

The Class 5 Licence course can be completed in one day if you already have strong logbook skills and have previously completed Unit Standard 24089. Otherwise, the course is generally completed over two days.

The first part of the course includes instruction on the Class 5 and General Road Code. Once you are ready, you will head to AA or VTNZ to sit your Class 5 Learner Licence. You are not required to purchase a road code for this.

After your learner licence is completed, you will return to continue the training and assessment process. This includes working through the Class 5 workbook as part of your learning, followed by a closed-book assessment. If you are completing the one-day option, you will then move on to a pre-assessment drive, which can take between 15 minutes and one hour depending on your previous experience, before completing the practical driving assessment with the assessor.

If you also need to complete the logbook unit standard, a second day will be required. This includes additional workbook training and assessment before completing the driving assessment.

Once you have successfully completed the assessment and practical drive, you will receive your Class 5 Licence Certificate to take to AA or VTNZ so your Class 5 licence can be added to your licence record.
